Buttock Implants or Buttock Augmentation
Buttock augmentation surgery is a cosmetic surgical procedure that improves the shape and contour of the buttocks. The volume for the augmentation is obtained from the patient’s own fatty tissue, when available, orsilicone implants. Patients best suited for buttock augmentation are those with poorly developed gluteus muscles and resulting ‘flat’ bottoms.
There are two options to improve the shape and contour of the buttocks. The first is the classic ‘Brazilian Buttock Lift’ where the patient’s own fatty tissue is used to augment and contour the buttocks. It is an all-natural augmentation procedure that reshapes the buttocks into a more youthful and fuller appearance using fat transfer. This procedure is ideal for patients who desire an improvement in the appearance of their buttocks and who also have stubborn areas of fatty deposits. These patients not only have the benefit of buttock augmentation, but also benefit from liposuction of their trouble spots.
The second option is the use of a solid, silicone implant. These implants are specially designed and contoured to best produce an appealing shape. This procedure is ideal for patients who do not have adequate amounts of fatty deposits to create an aesthetically pleasing buttock. An implant is therefore necessary to obtain the desired volume. Careful measurements are performed by Dr. Nguyen to select a suitable implant size. There are multiple shapes and sizes available, and the best option will be determined for you at your consultation appointment.
Reasons for Considering a Brazilian Buttock Lift or Buttock Implants:
- Presence of a disproportionate figure with a ‘flat’ bottom
- Desire for an increased size with improved fitting of clothing
- Poorly developed or shaped buttocks leading to an unappealing appearance
The Buttock Augmentation Procedure
Buttock augmentation procedures are performed under general anesthesia and last anywhere from two to three hours depending on the type of procedure is performed as well as the amount of volume required. In patients who are undergoing fat transfer for a Brazilian Buttock Lift, trouble areas are marked for liposuction. The fatty tissue is then suctioned from these areas and carefully prepared to be transferred to the buttocks. Multiple tiny incisions are made so that the fat may be transplanted into the buttocks. Since the fat cells are transplanted, not all transferred cells will survive. Therefore patients may require an additional procedure to reach the desired volume.
Patients who do not have an adequate supply of fatty tissue, are not candidates for a fat transfer procedure, but instead may be candidates for a buttock augmentation using an implant. Here a small incision is made between the buttocks and a pocket is dissected subfascially (deep to the fascia). Once in place, the incision is closed in layers with absorbable sutures. Patients are discharged home that same day following their procedure.

Recovery following Buttock Augmentation
Patients should plan for a restful week off of work to allow for an appropriate recovery after the placement of buttock implants. You will need to refrain from sitting on the buttocks for at least 2 weeks, recommended 8 weeks of limited sitting. Patients will often have pain following this procedure, however the pain is usually well controlled with oral pain medications. Complications after buttock augmentation are rare, but may occur. You will be given a thorough post-operative instruction sheet written by Dr. Nguyen. Following these instructions will help reduce the risk of complications.
